About
Opened with the nation on July 10, 1973. Restored for its next chapter.
From the pit to a garden
Long before it was a garden, locals called this place the pit. It was a rock quarry, and its stone built Nassau's roadways and the walls of Fort Charlotte.
In 1951, Mr. Oris Russell of the Ministry of Agriculture imagined something else for the old quarry. The Nassau Botanical Gardens opened on July 10, 1973, the day The Bahamas became independent.
Today it's 18 acres of tropical flora and more than 600 species, including the Yellow Elder, the national flower of The Bahamas.
